A laser, which stands for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation,” is used in many types of surgery. It uses an intensely hot, precisely-focused beam of light to excise or destroy diseased tissue, to shrink or destroy tumors and lesions, and to seal blood vessels to prevent bleeding. The three most often used types of lasers used in medical treatment are: (i) the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, which is primarily a surgical tool used to minimize bleeding while cutting or vaporizing tissue; (ii) the neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser, which can deeply penetrate tissue and is an alternative to invasive surgery; and (iii) the argon laser, which is used in eye surgery and superficial skin disorders in a procedure known as photodynamic therapy (PDT).
