ForensisGroup CEO Mercy T. SteenwykDear FG Team,

In 2020, we frightfully witnessed 150% increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans in all major U.S. cities.  The atrocity of this racial violence is alarming and reached a turning point, a critical juncture.  Something needs to be done.

ForensisGroup stands in solidarity with my fellow Asian Americans as we battle racial violence.  ForensisGroup does not tolerate hate, violence, racism, and social injustice.

I am disheartened and as I write this letter, I cannot solely inhabit the role of your CEO taking a stance.  The words I crafted poured directly out of my own identity and creed as a person.  I am an Asian immigrant.

When I was a child, my mother taught me to speak up and use my voice.  Several decades later and 10,000 miles away from my provincial hometown in the Philippines, I am called to the task of using my voice to fight for what is right – to speak up against hate and injustice.

Asian immigrants have been suffering from racial trauma for a long time.  We have been victims of structured racial inequities.  In all of these, for the most part, we have been invisible.  We worked hard in obscurity.  We remained humble and grateful for the opportunity.  However, this invisibility has made racial violence and oppression largely unnoticed.  President Biden spoke of it as he condemns the “vicious hate crimes against Asian Americans who have been attacked, harassed, blamed, and scapegoated.”

What are we to do . . .

Let us educate ourselves and those around us and learn how to help victims of racial attacks.  Let us connect and build cross communities.  Let us listen to stories of struggle of immigrants to know who they are and what they contribute to society.  This is a turning point, a critical juncture.  The AAPI community will be heard.  This is America and we are part of the richness and strength of its diversity.

It is my mother’s voice I hear, the power of my own voice, the power of courage to fight for what is right.

Stop hate crimes against Asian Americans.  Stop hate.
