Expertise DescriptionI have over 35 years experience in Chemical Engineering with expertise in polymer processing (design and simulation rheology); composite materials and processing; chemical handling; polymeric materials and properties. I have additional knowledge in the application of rheology and heat transfer to polymer processing and the processing of other non-Newtonian fluids; polymer processing including extrusion, injection molding, film blowing, fiber spinning, blow molding and film blowing; fluid instabilities and fracture; polymer liquid crystals; constitutive theories; polymer structure and processability. My expertise also includes the effects of flow on order and morphology (polymers); suspension rheology; thermoplastic composites processing; and food processing/rheology. I have more than 30 years expert witness experience with consultations, deposition, and courtroom testimony.
Areas of Expertise
Expert witness experience includes Radiation heating of polymers to increase processing rates, Multi-layer films with certain optical properties, Control of processing behavior of polyethylenes using sparsely branched resins, failure of a surgical tubing as a result of internal flaws, failure of rung of a ladder for exiting a swimming pool, and reducing yellowness of a polymer using phosphorous compounds.
Consulting experience includes Processing of bio-degradable polymers for generating tubes for heat stents, control the morphology of polymer blends during processing, flow behavior of fluids with yield stresses, simulation of injection molding of long fiber composites, and processing of unstable polymers at lower temperatures using processing aids.
Professional experience includes being a Professor of Chemical Engineering, an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, an Assistant Professor, and a Research Engineer.
My area of expertise is the flow behavior of polymers and its effect on the processing of polymers. We have significant efforts in the injection molding of polymers and polymer composites. We do both experimental work and numerical simulations. I have won all the major awards for teaching and research from the Society of Plastics Engineers. I am the principle author of a textbook on polymers.
I have expertise in polymer composites processing. Although most of what I do is involved with thermoplastic composites I have had experience with thermosetting systems. My experience is concerned with the processing of the composites as well as in their preparation.
