Neither the U.S. (1969) nor California (1970) Endangered Species Act have regulatory authority over imported animal products — assuming the products in dispute were seized under one or both of these Acts in California.
Imported animal products are generally regulated by The U.S. Department of Agriculture, and subject to seizure and destruction in certain circumstances.
For example, The Convention in International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates import/export of certain animal products such as elephant ivory and rhino horns, and will seize and destroy such products to discourage global commercial trade involving “endangered species” among member nations.
