ForensisGroup Barcode Expert Witnesses are involved with the design and with research on the codes found on most packaged products.
Barcode experts use the UPC-A code format with the GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), which is comprised of two parts—the UPC Company Prefix and the number that that is assigned to a unique product. A barcode is a graphical representation of a product’s identifying data formed by a two-dimensional pattern of black and white shapes. Barcodes can be read by optical devices, such as barcode readers and scanners. Barcodes are most commonly composed of parallel black and white lines and are applied to automate the transfer of product information, like the price, from the product to an electronic inventory system and cash registers. Barcode experts work scanners and laser, as well as the underlying software programs that interpret the data. They are developing point-of-sale technology, such as scanners with image recognition technology. This includes 2D images, or multiple width lines. helium neon lasers. They measure energy consumption and efficiency.
They are asked to opine on issues of scanner calibration of the laser and system. They also are asked to assist in antitrust litigation where there are allegations, or anti-competitive behavior, monopolization, and misleading statements. Other cases involve patent infringement and trade secrets.
Our barcode experts have degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics. They design, develop, and maintain advanced software and firmware for barcode scanners. Some design and test retail barcode scanning and imaging systems. They research issues concerning barcodes, such as poor image quality, barcode placement on products, and flawed data quality. They look for solutions to excessive press gain, color combination issues, and problems with the reflective characteristics of metal or metalized substrates. They also have experience with carton and pallet conveyor controls including sorting systems, barcode readers, RFID, and HMI design, as well as programming experience in the related field of machine vision and Auto ID.
