I have over a decade of experience consulting in the fields of nuclear criticality safety (NCS), non-destructive assay (NDA), radioactive waste management, safety and compliance reviews, audits, and reactor physics. My expertise includes nuclear criticality safety and non-destructive assay support to five challenging and complex decommissioning projects. The remediation projects have involved the exhumation, assay, treatment and packaging of large volumes of legacy buried waste materials from large-scale burial pits, linear trenches, standpipes, and bunkers. The gaseous diffusion plant D&D includes development and implementation of systematic approaches for measurement of miles of process gas piping, and the development of the Criticality Incredible strategy or demolition and subsequent burial of process buildings. My duties on these projects included regular interfacing with the regulator, including participation in the USACE incident investigation and emergency response preparedness for SLDA. First in the arena of industrial research and then as a university professor, I have spent more than 35 years pursuing the challenges of alternative forms of energy for transportation and electrical power. Some recent examples of my research are: the development of direct electromagnetic conversion of light energy into DC electrical power, the production and use of hydrogen as an alternative energy carrier, and the design of an electronic DC/DC converter for implementation in a vehicle application. Throughout my career I have consistently applied my skills to solving the practical problems caused by the contemporary sources of energy used for transportation and electric power generation. My combination of industrial research experience and academic background has given me a sharp analytical approach tempered with an understanding of the economic constraints of the existing infrastructure.
I have more than 15 years experience in the field of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with a focus on Control systems and dynamics. My applied research in control theory includes nonlinear control, adaptive designs, distributed parameter systems, automotive / aerospace systems, energy storage, biotechnology, stochastic nonlinear systems, partial differential equation (PDE) control, delay systems, model-free optimization / extremum seeking, and other industrial collaborations. I have experience with control problems with aerodynamic drag reduction, fusion reactors, magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in plasmas, internal combustion engines, and source seeking for autonomous vehicles in GPS-denied environments. I also have experience with blade-vortex interaction on helicopter rotors, and control of satellites, underwater vehicles, and biological / chemical reactors. I have prior expert witness experience.
