Expertise DescriptionI have more than 40 years experience in the field of Clinical Engineering with expertise in Healthcare Technology Management and Biomedical Engineering. I have experience with medical device technology, compliance and standards, familiarity with the design, use and malfunctions associated with defibrillators, electrosurgical units (ESU), infusion pumps, and patient monitors. I have additional experience with establishing hospital-based biomedical departments; medical equipment selection; provision or establishment of computerized medical device control programs for preventive maintenance and maintenance. I have prior expert witness experience with consultations, deposition, and courtroom testimony.
Areas of Expertise
My expert witness experience includes automated external defibrillator failure, alarms and medical devices, infusion pumps, electrosurgical burns, and patient monitor problems.
My consulting experience includes advising on requirements for an ideal computerized maintenance management system, project manager for health system to choose a vendor for smart infusion pumps and to implement those pumps; and assessments of system wide clinical engineering departments and make recommendations.
My professional experience includes being an Expert Consultant for hospitals, medical device companies, legal firms, and insurance carriers. I have previous experience as a Director of Clinical Engineering.
I have extensive experience with AED units in general, and with Philips AED units in particular. While Director of Clinical Engineering at a major health care provider in Delaware, I was responsible for the decision to bring approximately 150 Philips HeartStart AED units into the facility. After purchase, I was responsible for all issues regarding these units. Since starting my Expert Witness consulting business in 2011, I have consulted on four AED cases.
While Director of Clinical Engineering in Delaware I was responsible for managing their fleet of about 120 AED units. Since becoming a Consultant in 2011, I have handled 4 AED cases, one in the plaintiff side and three on the defendant side defending owners of AED or a company responsible for maintenance of AED.
