Expertise DescriptionI have more than 30 years of experience in computer systems and information technology. My company provides expert witness, consulting, and training services in the IT field, with a focus on Microsoft networking technologies. As an expert witness, I testified in an antitrust case and have since worked on several high-profile patent cases. As a consultant, I have worked with both small and large businesses on a variety of networking, office automation and Web projects. In the training world, I have written seminars for major technology companies, and have taught computer networking and operating systems to thousands of students across the world, both in-person and over the Internet. I have also written 19 books covering topics such as Web design, client/server networking, and Windows certification. I have over 15 years of expert witness experience with consultation, deposition, and courtroom testimony.
Areas of Expertise
My expert witness experience includes 20 cases over 17 years, 17 depositions, 22 expert reports, and 5 court appearances. Most of these cases were patent lawsuits involving computer technologies, including Internet, e-commerce, Web site customization, office automation, browsers, servers, disk backup, and network printing. I have worked for the industry’s largest companies and law firms as well as major federal government agencies. My experience includes district court cases, International Trade Commission cases, and Inter Partes Review cases.
My consulting experience includes a wide variety of IT projects from 1985 to the present. With large companies, for example, I trained engineers on Windows and Internet technologies; helped a company roll out Windows 2000 around the world; and advised on building a computer Help Desk at the Superconducting Supercollider laboratory. In the small business area, I programmed a multiuser database system for a credit collection agency; created marketing websites for classical artists; and designed and implemented an emergency “hot site” for an IT placement firm.
My professional experience includes in addition to the consulting and litigation work detailed in the preceding paragraphs, developing and delivering IT training as well as creating commercial books and videos. I have been designing and presenting high-level technical seminars since 1988, and have led over 300 public and corporate seminars throughout the US, Canada, the UK and Asia. I have authored or co-authored 19 commercial books, as well as numerous whitepapers, technical videos, and blog posting for organizations.
I have taught, written books about, and consulted on operating system topics for nearly 30 years. Operating systems and their user interfaces have been the focus of my seminar and book careers. The first operating system seminar I taught was in 1988 for IBM PC-DOS.
I have been involved in a number of patent disputes dealing with e-commerce, including a noteworthy case with a leading technology company's e-commerce patent portfolio. With respect to web-based advertising, I was an expert witness in a high-profile case that focused on web-based advertising. I also have long experience with web design, having taught seminars and written books on the subject over many years. My experience working as an expert is extensive, encompassing five court appearances, one arbitration hearing, 20+ expert reports and 18 depositions. I have never been disqualified as an expert.
