Expertise DescriptionI have more than 40 years experience in computing, including over 35 working on Internet protocols and applications. I have been a pioneer in multimedia email, online payment systems, and online point of sales systems, and have been closely tracking and participating in a number of related fields. I am best known as author of the MIME standard, which is used trillions of times every day, in virtually every email and web page on the Internet. I have also offered my services as an Internet technology expert witness for over a decade with consultations and deposition.
Areas of Expertise
I have been an expert witness or consultant in 14 patent points to date. Most of them deal with either email systems or electronic payment systems, but I have also worked on a few others. I have never testified, because none of my cases have gone to trial, but I have been told multiple times that my work helped bring about a favorable settlement.
I have consulted with multiple startup companies, and helped launch or advance ventures that included two IPO’s. Most of my recent consulting, however, has been as an expert witness.
I served over 5 years as a Distinguished Engineer for IBM. I have been Chief Scientist, Chief Technology Officer, or CEO of several startups. Earlier, I was the author of the Andrew Message System, a pioneering multimedia email system, the MIME standard for multimedia data, and metamail program for adding MIME support to pre-MIME software. I have also taught on the faculties of Carnegie Mellon University, Grinnell College, and the University of Michigan.
