Expertise DescriptionI have over 45 years experience in naval architecture. My expertise includes: surface propulsion applications, sea trials & analysis of high speed amphibious vehicles, tank testing of propulsion systems, and vessel motion analysis. I have provided expert consultation in the areas of collision reconstruction, stern drive failures, yacht sinking, fishing vessel capsizing, and injury resulting from vessel motions, propeller contact, and other causes. I have more than 20 years expert witness experience with consultations, deposition, and courtroom testimony.
Areas of Expertise
My expert witness experience includes: Personal Watercraft (Jet ski) accidents, reconstruction and analysis; Sailboat and sailboat racing accidents; Small craft and fish boar capsizing and sinking; Small craft wake damage; Propeller contact injury; Speed and power claims involving surface-piercing propellers; Shipboard line handling injury.
My consulting services include: Speed and power predictions involving surface-piercing propellers; Tidal energy recovery; Propulsion performance testing for hybrid planing-hydrofoil vessels.
I can calculate loads from wind, waves and current, and have some limited experience with anchoring and mooring systems.
I’ve worked a number of cases involving serious propeller contact injury, one retained by defense attorney and two by plaintiff side. Also some consultation for builders who were considering propeller ducts or guards to reduce the possibility of contact injury with swimmers and/or wildlife.
A large part of my technical background is in propellers, an expertise acquired through my employment as Applications Naval Architect for a manufacturer company.
