My formal education and training includes navigation, marine transportation, human factors, accident investigation, hazardous materials, and marine safety. I have served at sea aboard both merchant ships and naval ships as an officer. As an Assistant Professor of Marine Transportation, I have taught upper-division marine transportation courses in navigation, seamanship, collision regulations, and deck safety. As a marine expert, I have investigated over 400 accidents, which involved collisions, deepwater investigations, allisions, fires/explosions, cargo loss/damage, slips-trips-falls, personal watercraft (jetski) accidents, mooring line mishaps, marina accidents, and human factors issues. I have additional experience with warnings & labels, aids to navigation, design defects, navigation practice, HAZMAT, Coast Guard regulations, OSHA regulations, standards of care, standards of practice, seamanship issues, collision regulations, right-of-way between vessels, seaworthiness, stairways, ladders, environmental issues, vessel maneuvering, storm warnings, fall protection, safe speed, excessive speed, proper lookout, cargo documentation, hazardous materials (HAZMAT) stowage/handling, pipeline allisions, offshore platforms, recreational boats, cruise ships, drillships, mobile offshore drilling units (MODU), International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, pilot ladders, radar data, ship handling, ocean shipping, bulk liquid cargo handling, cargo contamination, personal injuries, medical first aid/treatment, deck gratings, and deck coatings. I have over 25 years expert witness experience with consultations, deposition, and courtroom testimony.

My professional experience includes being a Consultant in the Marine industry with prior experience as an Officer in the U.S. Navy, Marine Sales Manager, Marine Representative, Marketing Representative, Transportation Representative, Navigator and Cargo Officer, and Third Mate.
I have supervisory experience and formal training in managing vessel mooring (in port) locations, including in storm (hurricane/typhoon) situations. My background includes proper mooring methods, weather aspects, proper pier/dock selection, and safe haven alternatives.
I have formal training and experience in proper/safe transport of HAZMAT, including the federal regulations which apply to such shipments. I’ve served as an expert in several cases involving bulk liquid HAZMAT in barges.
I’ve served in numerous stevedoring/marine construction cases, including crane failure with a fatal injury.
I have experience in marine and offshore warnings and have done many offshore injury cases and onshore injury cases. I am a qualified warnings expert.
I’ve been an expert in numerous lake accidents, including: boat collisions, water skiing, knee boarding, boat capsizing, towline recoil, towed inflatables, boat striking dock, fire, boat groundings, houseboat mishaps, drownings, passenger loss overboard, jet ski mishaps, right-of-way between boats, carbon monoxide, excessive speed, proper lookout, navigation warnings, buoyage, navigation rules of the road, proper moorings, boat/jet ski rentals.
I’ve served as an expert in many Jones Act cases involving maintenance & cure, & numerous fishing vessel crew injury cases. I know the regulations and maintenance & cure aspects.
I have formal training in the handling of refrigerated cargoes on ships, and have served aboard reefer ships. My background includes receiving/loading reefer cargoes, inspecting reefer cargoes, and discharging reefer cargoes, including various medicines.
I’ve done many step/ladder/stairway mishaps aboard ships of all types. As an elected member of a major university human factors Triumvirate, I have demonstrated a high level of competence in the evaluation of such mishaps and the ability to render appropriate (supportable) opinions based on Coast Guard and international requirements and/or human factors standards. My grad school work in human factors has been accepted in many state and federal courts.
I’ve served as an expert for plaintiff & defense counsel in many trip-and-fall cases in which dva was centrally causal to the accident. I’m a human factors expert and marine safety expert. There are numerous regulations and standards which govern steps and stairs/stepdowns on ships, and I’ve applied these to many cases to the benefit of my clients.
