Expertise Description

My career has spanned over 25 years working with materials engineering, failure analysis and engineering investigations, including litigation support. My focus has been on metallurgy, property/structure relationships, stress conditions and corrosion of both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. I have expertise in the determination of root cause and problem resolution, and extensive experience designing and conducting field and laboratory testing. I have additional expertise in the areas of materials characterization, fractography, metallography and mechanical testing. I have worked to support a broad range of industries, including railroad, automotive, aviation, recreational equipment, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, pulp & paper, food services, power generation, construction, building systems, weldments, and light manufacturing. I have also spent 15 years as a materials engineering expert witness in Illinois by providing consultations and deposition.

Relevant Experiences

I have significant experience using technical standards to assist clients with matters associated with component approvals, including FAA-PMA’s (Parts Manufacturer Approval). Technical Standard Orders (TSO’s) are specific prescriptive standards used by the FAA to qualify both OEM and after-market components.
I have extensive aviation/aircraft component failure analysis experience, including evaluation for form, fit and function. I have spent over twenty-five years evaluating various components for compliance with technical specifications from various organizations and agencies (FAA, ASTM, SAE/AMS, DOD, DOE, ANSI, UL, AREMA, AAR, ISO, etc.). I have created and reviewed prescriptive standards through ASTM for over twenty years and with AREMA for the past five years. I have provided the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) first-article testing and validation testing for a wide variety of components, including fasteners, for all branches of service. I have extensive aviation/aircraft component failure analysis experience, including evaluation for form, fit and function. I have held an FAA Repairman Certificate for specific component testing
