A nursing expert witness testified in the wrongful death lawsuit filed against the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, Iowa. The children of Maria O’Brien claim the nursing home was negligent in caring for their mother and are seeking $10M in damages. The nursing expert reviewed the care provider’s home records and testified that Mrs. O’Brien’s medications were not properly administered. In addition, when left unattended, Mrs. O’Brien suffered numerous falls.
The American Nurses Association reports that “massive reductions in nursing budgets, combined with the challenges presented by a growing nursing shortage, have resulted in fewer nurses working longer hours and caring for sicker patients. This situation compromises care.” If the standard of medical care is not met, litigation may ensue.
Nursing expert witnesses have extensive experience in reviewing medical negligence cases. They evaluate medical records for patients in acute care, long term care, and home care settings. These medical experts are trained to provide a knowledgeable and unbiased opinion as to whether acceptable standards of nursing practice have been violated. In the case against Good Shepherd Health Center, the nursing expert witness opined that the nursing home facility was negligent in their care of Mrs. Maria O’Brien.
