Petroleum is a thick, flammable mixture of gaseous liquid and solid hydrocarbons found naturally beneath the earth’s surface which is separated to create many petroleum products. These include natural gas, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil, and lubricating oils.
In the oil industry, crude oil is classified by its location of origin and by its relative weight or viscosity (e.g., light, intermediate, or heavy). Also, as a consequence of the relative content of sulfur in natural oil deposits, oil is called “sweet,” which means it has relatively little sulfur, or “sour,” meaning the oil has high amounts of sulfur.
Typically, the petroleum industry has five sectors: (i) upstream, which involves the exploration, development, and production of crude oil or natural gas; (ii) downstream, which is the oil tankers, refiners, retailers and consumers; (iii) pipelines; (iv) marine; and (v) service and supply.
Petroleum and oil expert witnesses have experience in all aspects of the oil and petroleum industry. This encompasses the processes of exploration, extraction, refining, transporting, and promoting petroleum products. Although the largest volume products of the oil and petroleum industry are fuel oil and gasoline, these experts understand and work in the manufacture of many of its chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics.
