Areas of Expertise
My expert witness experience includes cases involving intellectual property including: software design and copyrights, patents for data mining, patents for search engine algorithms and methods, speech recognition, integrated software systems, computational and statistical applications in finance, statistical machine learning, text mining, text processing, and natural language.
My consulting experience includes designing context-based machine translation methods, data mining to improve workplace safety, business and technology strategy for intelligent language tutoring, expert systems and financial data mining, real time transactions, new IT technology insertion, and launching new search engines.
My professional experience includes University Professor, Director, Professor of Computer Science, and Chairman, with prior experience as Associate Professor, Research Fellow, Co-Founder and Director and Scientific Advisor, and Research Assistant.
I regularly teach e-commerce and direct the Language Technologies Institute at a distinguished university and have developed industrial courses in e-commerce (including e-payments) for external providers. I have also worked with banks, financial transactions and financial data mining.
I know Python, PHP, and other programming languages, and my main research area is natural language processing — search engines, information extraction, parsing, text mining, machine translation, etc.
In the past ten years, I have worked primarily on patent validity and infringement, including providing testimony (trials, hearings, depositions), both for plaintiff and defendant.
I have worked with the banking industry (First USA, Citibank, etc.), and founded a company on financial optimization and treasury operations for banks.
I have been involved as an expert witness in many software IP litigations, but mostly on the patent side rather than the copyright side — though I’m also familiar with copyright issues from my work on digital libraries (beyond SW copyright).
I am familiar with the area of automated document verification/authentication, having worked on fraud detection (e.g. credit card fraud), electronic-commerce and authentication protocols. I am also familiar with Visual Basic, having worked with it in the 1990’s.
I am an expert in e-commerce and internet advertisement. I teach courses for the e-business technology graduate program at a leading university. I have expertise with search engines and advertising (including SEO), advertisement selection and placement, recommendation systems, machine learning, and personalization.
