Expertise DescriptionI have 25 years experience in the fields of soils, soil fertility, soil and water conservation, soil morphology, soil classification, soil sampling, irrigation, field crops, forage crops and pastures, grain and forage crops, landscape gardening, horticulture, and environmental issues and ethics. As a geoscientist, I have consulted on the issues of management for sustainable agriculture over the Central and Southern Great Plains, irrigation water rights, soil fertility, soil salinity documentation, soil excavation, and evaluation of nitrogen and phosphorus fate in alternative cropping systems. My grant research studies consist of water retention techniques, the establishment of roadside vegetation, and soil water monitoring of subsurface drip irrigation systems. I have prior expert witness experience.
Areas of Expertise
My expert witness experience includes: Analysis of crop / soil test data, Herbicide damage / negligence claim; Analysis of soil, landscape, crop management systems and erosion potential, pipeline damages arbitration; Rendered opinion on pipeline construction and soil reclamation, damage / negligence claim; Rendered opinion on potential for soil or weather damage, insurance claim; Evaluation of Environmental Impact Report and related data for ecological impacts on wetlands, vegetative ecosystems and soil, water rights case.
My consulting services include: Land classification for water rights; Soil mapping for environmental impact statement; Analyze soil and irrigation water quality and supply, develop agronomic practices for wastewater land application permit; Wetlands delineation; Evaluation of irrigation water availability, land requirements, and nutrient management plans for an animal processing plant; Evaluation of revegetation projects during reclamation; Damage assessment of salinity due to brine spills and leaks in oilfields/drilling operations; Assessment of potential salinity impact during land application of brine wastes on native grasses.
My professional experience includes: Presenting soil topics to more than 1000 farmers / consultants, 500 homeowners, and > 20000 K – 12 students; Taught soils, soil fertility, soil and water conservation, soil profile evaluation, soil morphology and classification, irrigation, field crops, horticulture, undergraduate statistics, environmental issues and ethics; Research topics: Evaluation of crop and natural ecosystems management systems on soil properties and characteristics; drip irrigation system for land application / irrigation of treated wastewater for crop production – dryland crop production systems to improve water use efficiency; Japan Seminar, studying soil science, crop production and culture.
